When is the last time your walked into a dark room and fumbled about for a match with which to light a candle, or a lantern, in order to be able to find your way around? You can’t recall that time? If you’re reading this, then of course not, because you’re sitting in front of your computer screen or laptop, viewing this over the internet in a room you just entered. You flipped a convenient switch and sat down in a splendidly lighted room, without giving it a second thought. 

 

When Rev. Robert Cook made his early trips to El Salvador as a missionary representative of the Presbyterian Church USA, one of the experiences he wrote about in the journal he kept was how overwhelmingly dark quickly becomes at 6:00 PM every day of the year. Because if it’s location on the equator, darkness falls like clockwork daily and all year around in El Salvador. 

 

The darkness was unsettling and difficult for him to get used to. Families with children had to plan for them to get home from school, attend to the necessary chores, obtaining water, caring for livestock, tending to crop, all before night falls. 

 

The Legacy of Light Project was established to address this great need by obtaining and installing solar powered lighting for these impoverished families, to bring light into their darkness. This is and has been the mission of The Legacy of Light Project since its founding in 2016. 

 

One solar-powered system for one home approximately costs $280. For the panel, wiring, lithium battery to store power and installation. 

 

Our faithful staff in El Salvador earns a pittance of what it would cost to have someone do the contact and organizing work leading up to the actual transportation and installation of the lighting systems if it were completed here in the states. They do this work for the legacy of Light Project because of their faith and their devotion to serving the impoverished population of the rural El Salvadoran county-side.
