Origin of Legacy of Light Project

Legacy of Light resulted from a message from Rev. Cook’s friend Fr. Candido in Spring 2016. It was sent to me in Des Moines, Iowa, where I was living at the time. It was an email from Milagro Rodreguez, who was assisting Fr. Candido. She said that Fr. Candido has asked to send me a message to ask me to consider organizing a solar electricity project for the small farm family homes on the Berlin Mountain.

How It Works

Solar Energy Collection

Each unit starts with a compact yet powerful solar panel mounted on the roof of a home.

The panel is positioned to capture maximum sunlight during the day, even in remote and mountainous areas.
It requires no maintenance and functions independently of any traditional power grid.

Energy Storage

The collected solar energy is stored in a reliable lithium-ion battery.

These batteries are lightweight, safe, and long-lasting — ideal for rugged rural environments.
Energy is stored throughout the day and powers the lighting at night.
The setup can support up to 3–4 bright LED lights inside the home.

Night-Time Lighting

Once the sun sets, families switch on their indoor LED lights powered by the stored solar energy.

Lights are smoke-free, fire-safe, and brighter than candles or kerosene.
They offer clean, reliable light for studying, cooking, caregiving, and community activities.
A simple switch or remote activates the system, making it user-friendly for people of all ages.

Impact

Before, we had only candles and smoke. Now our children can study at night.
